Ever since her study in developmental psychology (1967-1973), Marianne Riksen-Walraven’s research has been focusing on the role of early social experience in children’s socio-emotional and personality development.

Her PhD thesis (1974-1977), an experimental intervention study on 100 parent-infant dyads, demonstrated the effects of parental responsiveness on infant exploratory competence and contingency-learning at age one. Longitudinal follow-up of the sample showed effects of early parental responsiveness on children’s personality (i.e., ego-resiliency) up to age twelve. Later on,  Marianne Riksen-Walraven supervised research projects examining the role of early caregiver-child interactions in various cultures (Japan, Indonesia, Surinam-Dutch) and in various high-risk samples (e.g., deaf-blind children; infants with depressed mothers). In recent years, her research also includes young children’s experiences with professional caregivers and peers in child care centers.

In 1998, she started the “Nijmegen Longitudinal Study”, in which a community sample of children and their parents has up to now been followed at 1, 2½, 5, 7, and 9 years of age. Because recent research points out that the impact of early social experience on children’s development and functioning is mediated by the influence of such experience on the developing brain and particularly those neurobiological systems that underlie later self-regulation, her research increasingly includes physiological assessments, such as salivary cortisol measures.
